Cigar Review: Underground/Black Label Trading Co. Catacomb

In November of 2014 the Underground Cigar Shop partnered with Black Label Trading Company to release a shop exclusive cigar. The project was titled Catacomb, which is a fitting name for the Underground. The Underground Cigar Shop, owned by Don Wiggins, specializes in boutique cigars. One of the biggest selling lines at the Underground has been James Brown’s Black Label Trading Company so this collaboration between the two only made sense.  This cigar launched at an in store event although in true UG fashion a large number of boxes were sold pre-release before they even hit the shelves.  The Underground also has a very large online presence with a very active facebook group full of boutique cigar lovers who don’t mind telling you how it is!

Vitolas: The Catacomb is available in two vitolas, a 5×54 Robusto and a 6×50 Toro with a total of 125 boxes of each made.

Blend: Wrapper: Nicaraguan Maduro from Estili

Binder: Nicaraguan Habano from Condega

Filler: Nicaraguan

Appearance:  The Catacomb features a very dark and somewhat oily wrapper.  There is some tooth noticed on the wrapper.  The cigar has a unique band that has an image of a skull catacomb.  The band also very clearly lets you know that this cigar belongs to the Underground.

Pre-Light: On the pre-light I notice earthy notes from the wrapper and cocoa with a bit of vanilla from the foot of the Catacomb.  The cold draw is very earthy on the palate.

1st Third:  The first third of the UG Catacomb opens very smooth.  There are hints of cocoa and coffee with an earthy undertone.  There is a nice spice that is on the retrohale.

2nd Third: In the second third, the Catacomb gives more of the earthy notes but much more of the coffee comes through.  I also pick up slight leather notes.  I also notice that the strength seems to be picking up from a solid medium to medium plus.

Last Third: The last third of the Catacomb had flavor explosion, there were a lot of savory meat notes, some earth, and nice rich smoke.  The cigar finished at the upper end of medium strength.

Construction: The Catacomb was a very well put together cigar.  The cigar had a very nice draw and produced a perfect amount of smoke.

Burn: The Catacomb burned flawlessly with no touch ups needed.  The nub of the cigar also never burned hot.

Final Assessment: When it is all said and done, the Catacomb is a fantastic cigar.  This is an extremely flavorful cigar that delivers with what you would expect from a limited cigar.  There are complexities and flavors that keep you wanting more all while being an extremely balanced smoke without an overpowering strength.  This cigar is great right now and will only become better with time, if they last that long.

The Underground Cigar Shop is located at 6517-A  East Lancaster Ave. Fort Worth, Texas 76112.  You can reach them for orders at (817)507-3640.
