Behind The Booze:
If your into scotch, I am sure you have heard of the worlds most awarded single malt Scotch whisky – Glenfiddich. This spirit in specific, the 15 Year Old ‘Distillery Edition’ has been released in small numbers to a few select markets in the world. Previously available at selected airports around the world, this newly packaged ‘Distillery Edition’ is available in selected retailers and sells for £37.99 (roughly 52.00 usd) for a 70cl bottle. If you are currently a fan of the Glenfiddich line but seeking out a bit more of a punch, do not worry – this non chill-filtered whisky is bottled at 51% ABV! Released in a press conference Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, David Stewart reported – “Glenfiddich Distillery Edition is a classic expression of Glenfiddich with a higher strength which adds complexity. Characteristically, we have married the matured single malts for Distillery Edition in Glenfiddich’s unique oak marrying tuns to ensure a consistently, well-balanced and elegant signature malt. We have married Glenfiddich single malts in this way for almost 40 years and remain the only single malt distillery to do so.â€
This Single Malt Scotch Whisky was actually matured in American and European oak casks although the real ‘spin’ that gives this spirit the soul or character it has, the Oloroso sherry casks. The Glenfiddich website reports the whisky as ‘Boasting a deep, golden barley colour, the delicate floral aroma is punctuated with hints of freshly ground black pepper and vanilla. Creamily smooth on the palate, these floral and spicy black pepper notes gently mingle with luscious fruit and a hint of sherry wood, lazily lingering to a sweet and warm, velvety finish. – Now if that does not make you go out and buy a bottle I don’t know what will!
A golden honey color, far from transparent but not quite an oily smudge on the concrete. This whisky not only looks great in the glass but when I swirled it around, a thin film clung to the side of the glass, an ever so light caramel color reflecting off the light. This is a darker scotch than I normally go for, but boy was I rewarded for taking on the endeavor. The aroma from this, although slightly tainted by the burn of alcohol was uplifting and light with a touch of floral notes mixed with pepper. Damn.
Vibrant is just about the only word I can use for this whisky. Much lighter on the palate than I had expected with an extremely smooth, almost creamy texture with only a hint of bite that you would expect from a 51% ABV. I noticed a lot more spice ( black pepper maybe? ) with an oak over tone that was balanced out by a sweet flavor I could only closely relate to a dull vanilla – very enjoyable. I did add a half ice cube to the first tasting – it did not water the spirit down but the intensity was cut nearly in half. The second and third go around ( for the review only, I promise haha ) I drank it straight – damn fine.
Do you have a good cigar around just begging to be paired with an excellent scotch? I have to recommend the Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Distillery Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky ( damn thats a mouth full ) as a whisky to keep on you radar. Very reasonably priced, excellent flavors and a nice ‘kick’ without the alcohol bite – although this spirit is sitting at 51% ABV. Would I go out and buy a bottle, bet your ass I will. If your on the fence or not sure if this scotch is right for you, check out Master of Malt and pick up a sample or two and give them a shot!
