Behind The Booze:
Glenfiddich – also known as “Valley of the Deer’ was established in 1887 and is actually owned by the same individuals who produce Balvenie – something I did not know. Like many companies the Glenfiddich line offers a wide variety of malts – specifically the 12, 15, 18, 21, 30, 40 and 50 year old versions amongst several special bottlings. Now, I’m sure you would assume it by their portfolio, but Glenfiddich is known in many circles to be one of the better companies within the heavyweights in the Single Malt world.
While I was doing some research on this I found out that the Ancient Reserve is actually the flagship from the core Glenfiddich range. The 18 year Ancient Reserve was matured in a mix of Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks using one of the most complex aging process in the industry. To explain a small portion of this process, after the casks the spirit is then blended along with two other different casks in a large Solera Vat which I found out is always kept at 50% or higher of previously made whisky which is then transferred again – this time to a Solera Tuns to allow the malt to rest for a bit before being bottled. After being married in wooden tuns for at least three months, its rich, mellow flavors come together, creating an exceptionally smooth and remarkably deep single malt Scotch whisky with notes of baked apple, spice and robust oak. Each batch is unique and is of an extraordinary quality.”
Man this looks good – a deep hue of reddish gold with just a slight highlight around the edges – a perfect line when I swirled it around the glass, as well a small amount of which would slowly run down the side. The smell is not nearly as pungent as I had expected but did give off a very enjoyable odor, good and bad at the same time.
This is a scotch to write home to Ma about. Light, sweet and tangy to begin with – the alcohol content really is not apparent at this time but slowly creeps onto the palate. A mild ‘tinge’ to the sweet tang gave it the bitter hint that kept this from tasting like candy. After swirling it once or twice in my mouth this great sweet, floral spice similar to cinnamon just took control – not like cinnamon gum or schnapps but more subtle like a cinnamon stick that has been resting in some cider. The finish is what I would consider a medium bite – not like a straight shot of jack but no where near as smooth as some Glenlivet 12 year. The website reports that they attempt to hit that baked apple flavor – I didn’t get that.
I am not one for sweets, maybe a couple bites of a candy bar a month and I’m content but the sweetness that this scotch brings was no where near overpowering – just a dab will do! At 80 dollars a bottle I think this is a great buy – I wouldn’t put this up their with something to drink while smoking that $50.00 Cuban but I would say this is a great middle road spirit. I was able to cop a buzz off 3 fingers worth but the flavor is what really kept me coming back for more rather than the side effects. All in all, if your ready to upgrade from the $50.00 bottle but not quite ready to pull on the $120.00 – this is a great scotch for you.
