Behind the Stick:

There is very little background available on these custom rolled Cuban beauties. According to the PuroExpress website; they are hand made from the finest Cuban tobacco by “seasoned experts” specifically for the fine patrons of Puro. Available in bundles of 25,15,10 & 5 these custom rolled cigars can also be sampled in other sizes: Laguito No. 6 (6-1/2 x 55 ring) – Robusto (4-4/5″ x 49 ring) – Piramide (6-1/8 x 52 ring) – Petit Corona (5 x 42 ring).

The website says the Wrapper is a Shade grown coarse cut that has been maduro fermented while the Binder is shade grown and the Filler is a blend of Ligero, Seco and Volado Sun Grown Long Filler.

I have to admit that I was originally turned on to these Custom Cubans when I read a review by Steve Valle at back in January. Until then I had never even heard of a “Bespoke” or Custom Rolled Cuban available from an online retailer. My interest was peaked & I had to find out what these “Bespoke” cigars had to offer so I placed an order for a five pack and waited patiently until the package arrived.

These sticks are listed as Laguito No. 5 or Double Robusto but what really jumps out at you is the combination of the expertly executed short triple pig tail cap & covered foot. These aren’t the sort of features that would be employed by anyone without significant rolling experience and skill. The dark chocolate brown maduro wrapper offers an attractive oily glow and is virtually flawless. There is no band to remove so lets get down to business!

Aroma & Flavor:

The prelight aroma wafting off this oily beauty is 100% cuban goodness: barnyard + manure = Castro you gorgeous bearded comie bastard thanks for the good stuff! In all seriousness, I would bet my left arm that this cigar is all cuban just from smell. It clips easily but the cold draw doesn’t offer much of a preview of what is to come. A single match helps me establish a nice even burn and a sweet tobacco/dark chocolate flavor kicks things off nicely. The draw is near perfect and the resting smoke produces a pleasant sweet cedar aroma. The smoke leaves my mouth feeling a little dry but nothing a sip from my beverage (Arizona Green Tea) can’t cure. Between puffs a lingering aftertaste of sweet tobacco & nuts coats the inside of my mouth while my sinuses are treated to a smooth peppery spice on the retrohale.

At the halfway point a muted leather flavor has jumped into the fray but otherwise dark chocolate/sweet tobacco remain prominent. The burn has started twisting a bit and I am forced to threaten it with the possibility of a touch up match. As I smoked into the final third I must admit that I was forced to touch up a crooked burn that may have corrected itself if I had given it some time.

Outside of the one correction to the burn I have nothing but good things to report about the PuroExpress “Bespoke” Custom Rolled Cuban. The main flavor profile of sweet tobacco & dark chocolate, which was pretty good by itself, was joined by a light leather note at times. The sweet cedary aroma given off by the resting smoke complimented the flavor profile & the sweet tobacco & nut aftertaste kept me coming back for another puff right to the nub. The entire package works so well together that I’m already heading back to to order a bigger bundle.
