Cigar Review

Undercrown Sun Grown

The Undercrown is one of Drew Estate’s best selling core line cigars – birthed from the famed Liga Privada, which many of you may know was a private blend made for Steve Saka during his time at Drew Estate. The Undercrown was released in October of 2010 as a sort of “alternative” to the Liga Privada which was quite hard to find at the time. The story of the Undercrown is really interesting because it was a cigar birthed of need.

In early 2009 we asked our torcedores to smoke less Liga Privada cigars because they were leaving too few to be exported. This request was met with the disappointment you would expect, but rather than being disgruntled they responded by blending their own signature liga.
Incorporating many of the same rare tobaccos, but of different vintages and primings, the cigar they created was no mere replacement. Rather it is an exceptional smoking experience of uncompromising quality and flavor that deserves to be smoked by all.

It is always the master makers who are heralded, but the reality is that great cigars are the product of many talented people, most of whom toil in factories with no publicity ever. They are the uncelebrated heroes who make all of our lives more pleasurable with the cigars they craft. And therefore, it is with great pleasure that we are now sharing their factory floor creation with you as Undercrown, borne of our worker’s ingenuity, resourcefulness and passion for a great cigar.

For 5 years the Undercrown was only available in a Maduro, but in 2015 Drew Estate released the first line extension for the Undercrown: The Undercrown Shade. In 2016, Drew Estate then released the Undercrown Barrel Fermented as an exclusive and isn’t considered an official extension of the Undercrown line, making the Sun Grown the 2nd official Undercrown Line Extension and the 3rd cigar in the official Undercrown Line.

Another interesting fact about the Undercrown Sun Grown is that it is the second Undercrown Line Extension to be blended by Master Blender William Herrera who has been with Drew Estate since 2011 and was named Master Blender in 2014.

Challenging Willy Herrera and the Undercrown blending team to create the new expression after finally securing sun grown tobacco is extremely exciting, as we have tried to secure this Sumatra Ecuador tobacco for over 15 years.

First Third: The Undercrown Sun Grown starts off with a bang and takes no time to fill your palate with flavors of charred oak, toasted almonds, and malt. The cigar also provides rich black pepper and earth on the retrohale with a dry and woody finish. The Undercrown Sun Grown stands at a medium plus in body, full in flavor with solid construction, and provides plenty of smoke during the first third.

Second Third: The second third of the Undercrown Sun Grown moves into a more harmonious smoke as the flavors begin to mellow and marry. Although the flavors become less distinct, the overall flavor profile remains bold and full. Each puff is filled with rich, flavorful smoke with hints of sweetness fading in and out to balance out the earthiness of the profile. The Undercrown Sun Grown remains a medium plus in strength and full in flavor and body during the second third.

Final Third: There is a significant change in the profile of the Undercrown Sun Grown leading into the final third as the intensity of the flavors and strength increases. The charred oak and earthy notes become distinct again, providing a spicy and savory smoke in the final third. The retrohale is intense but provides tons of black pepper and leather which adds to the full profile of the cigar.

In all, the Undercrown Sun Grown is a dynamic addition to the Undercrown Line from Drew Estate. With a woody and earthy flavor profile balanced out with some spice and a bit of sweetness, the Undercrown Sun Grown is sure to be yet another hit from the crew at Drew Estate!
